Boomershoot 2007

Q: Why does the average Boomershoot participant attend the shoot?"

A: As with some other things that are beyond what our ape-like evolution prepared us for, explosions are, at some level, very odd and curious things. Our brains are programmed to pay special attention to strange and unusual things -- 'magic' things. Explosions invoke that curiosity of magic in our brains. A gun with its 'action at a distance' capability is a magic tool. But at long distances there typically isn't the immediate confirmation that something really happened 'out there'. I change that. By creating a sort of Walt Disney-like world where 'magic' happens, I give the shooter an escape from reality. This is a Magic Kingdom for long range shooters. For one day I give them the keys to the Kingdom where they get to perform their own magic.

As of April 6, 2007 there are only a few Boomershoot positions available. These positions were made available via rearranging some of the existing shooting positions and do NOT show up on the automated entry form. Please send an email to entry@boomershoot.com to find out more about participating in Boomershoot 2007.

Spectators do not need to pay or reserve a position. They may just show up on the day of the shoot, be polite, and enjoy the show.

Minimum Gun Safety Rules

These are the bare minimum rules which you must follow while at the event.  You MUST have them (or the equivalent thereof) memorized.  Please read the additional rules and clarifications.  These and other rules will be explained at the shooters meeting before you take your gun out of its case.

Wireless Internet service is completely functional. The SSIDs are Boomershoot1 and Boomershoot2. It's a satellite connection which means the latency is terrible. I was getting 1483 mS ping times to Boomershoot.com. But the download speed isn't too bad. See this web page for more details.

The ground was still a little bit wet but dry enough to have a nice event. Of course that could change if the forecast for snow on Monday turns out to be correct.

There are still some shooting positions available in the reorganized .50 caliber area. These are .30 caliber positions. Currently positions 9A, 9B, 9C, 10A, 10B, and 10C are available.

The night vision event idea was scrapped out of concern for the late night noise being an issue for the neighbors.

We will be having a dinner on Saturday night before the main event. See the details and how to pay here.

I have rearranged some of the .50 caliber shooters and have created 15 new .30 cal (or smaller caliber if you want) positions at the west end of the .50 caliber ghetto. From these positions you will be able to shoot at some of the 380 yard targets as well as all of the 575 and beyond targets.

If you want one of the positions send me an email with your phone number, your name, and the names of up to two other people. These additional people must be designated as either spotters (no charge) or shooters. I will respond within a day or two with your shooting position number (8A->11C are currently available) and how to pay for the position.

These are available on a first come first serve basis.

After much discussion and thinking about it I have decided we can’t allow tracers. At previous events, even though the ground was very wet, there have been several occurrences where tracers started fires in the grass. If those tracers had landed in the woods just a couple hundred yards to the east and started a fire it would be the end of Boomershoot. Sorry about that.

Yesterday I got wireless internet service (Wifi) implemented at the Boomershoot site. The signal isn’t all that strong but it is useable except for positions about 65 through 70. The parking area except for part of the .50 caliber area is fine too. I might be able to improve things some but I won’t know for a month or so. Because it is via satellite the ping times are rather long. The typical ping time from there to Boomershoot.com was about 1400 milliseconds. The specs on the service are:

Up to 512Kbps downstream
128Kbps upstream

Fair Access Policy threshold limits (monthly):
7,500MB Download
2,300MB Upload

What this means is that with a few dozen people using it things are going to be rather slow. Checking email and light blogging is going to be fine but uploading or downloading videos is out. We also need to be a little bit careful that we don’t exceed the monthly limits. The access point is unencrypted and has the SSID of “Boomershoot”.

I’ve been investigating the possibility of doing a night time Boomershoot on Friday night (something like 21:00 to midnight) the 27th. The answer is still up in the air. The blocking issue is the late night noise. I’ve been talking to some of the neighbors and I’m hoping to come up with a conclusion in a couple weeks.

There are two people on the waiting list for a spot in the main shooting area.

There appears to be enough interest in the Night Vision event. Details will be worked out and published after the first of the year.

There are four positions left in the .50 caliber ghetto. There is one person on the waiting list for a spot in the main shooting area.

We are giving serious consideration to a night time event. Shoot boomers with your night vision equipment.

Except for six positions in the .50 Caliber Ghetto Boomershoot 2007 is full. People without .50 caliber toys will be able to shoot from the ghetto but there will be some restrictions on the targets they can shoot at compared to people in the main areas. There is a waiting list, which is currently empty, for people that would like to participate and are willing to wait. Almost for certain someone will cancel (or maybe put their position for sale on eBay). We can probably also probably "make a deal" such sign up for a .50 Caliber position and then get transferred into the main area if a position becomes available.

For Boomershoot proper there are six position left in the .50 Caliber Ghetto, one position left in the main area and only three left on the berm. Sign up soon if you want to participate.

Excluding the .50 Caliber Ghetto there are only 9 positions still available. Three in the main section and six on the berm. The ghetto still has seven positions available.

A total of 54 positions have been taken. This is same as Boomershoot 2006 on opening day but Boomershoot 2007 is still six months away.

I have set the dates to be be the last weekend in April but the survey showed that enough people were interested in reserved positions that I want to implement that before accepting the entries.

The price will remain the same as last year. There were only a few in the survey that disagreed with the statement that the price was reasonable and one that strongly disagreed with the statement. But this last guy said he thought the price should be $4000/person so it sort of balances out.

The hotel package option isn't going to happen this year. Too much work for me to do at this time. Maybe next year. The survey did show some interest in that. So you can go ahead and make your hotel reservations if you want. Suggestions are here.

There are no significant obstacles to having 802.11(B) wireless internet service available for Boomershoot 2007.
