Boomershoot 2022 Clinic and Field Fire attendees

May is soon approaching so let me get this message out to you who are shooting with us on Friday and Saturday, April 29th and 30th.

We aren't going to change the schedule. Clinic shooters need to show up at 0830 on the days they are taking the Clinic and Field Fire shooters can show up any time they want. We will register people and give an armband for the day as usual.

We will give a short safety breif and demo for the Clinic shooters that normally ends around 1000 All can attend our class and demonstration but the only shooting during the demo will be our cadre. Once the demo is complete, we will signal using the air horn that the line can commence firing.

We will shoot until around noon and have a cease fire for about an hour. At around 1300 I will call a shooters meeting where I will get a count of people for their explosive targets that we will shoot at the end of the day – around 1530. I will also give a ticket to each person who will shoot the boomer targets so I can get a good count for Joe since he has to make the targets for us and get them to the 400 yard berm so we can shoot them. Hand your ticket to one of Joe's crew who will place one large and two small boomers at the 400 yard berm for you. If a buddy is staying at the firing line, bring his ticket when we put in the boomer targets.

We will continue to shoot until about 1500 when we will call a cease fire in order to put our boomers in at the 400 yard berm. When the line is clear, I will signal for us to go to the 400 yard berm where Joe will have our targets. Each ticket gets two small and one large boomer target that you will place along the berm where you want. Stakes and rubber bands are there so you can attach the targets to a stake in order to see it easier. We also have spray paint you can use to mark your targets. Put in your targets and head back to the firing line.

Once everyone has their targets placed on the 400 yard berm and I am positive no one is down range, I will give the signal to commence fire and we will shoot our boomers for about a half hour. After about a half hour I will inform the firing line that poaching is permitted on any target not yet destroyed. We will shoot for another ten or fifteen minutes or until I hear no more explosions and I will give a cease fire. Please, unload your rifle, case it, and remove it from the firing line. My cadre and I will walk the line ensuring every firing point is clear and safe before I will make the line safe. I ask that this be done quickly because Joe has to place a lot of targets downrange for the High Intensity shoot and the faster we make sure the line is safe, the faster Joe and his guys can prepare for High Intensity.

Safety is my number one requirement for everyone who is attending the Clinic and Field Fire. Please read the following and obey these rules. We have done real well for over twenty years of this, and I intend on doing real well this year. There is no compromise, no minor violations of safety.

1.   Do keep your rifle in a case to the firing line. Mark the case so the barrel is pointed downrange while inside the case. Sounds overkill but it is what Joe demands for the Boomershoot so get used to it during the Clinic and Field Fire. The rifle must be unloaded when bringing it to the line.

2.   I will let you remove your rifle and get it set up while we are running the demo for the Clinic shooters. Do not load and obviously do not shoot until we give the signal to shoot.

3.   The signal will be an air horn. One long blast means to cease fire, unload, safe the rifle and come off the rifle. Two blasts means the range is hot and you can shoot.

4.   Anyone can call a cease fire. Just be loud and keep calling it until we hit the air horn. We will find out what is happening and go from there. Shooters have called cease fires before and every time they were right.

5.   If you see someone handling a firearm in a dangerous manner, please inform the person in a polite manner and then get me or one of my cadre. This has not been necessary for about ten years but please, keep an eye open.

6.   At the end of the day, after we have shot our boomers and I have given a cease fire, do unload your rifle, case it, and remove it from the firing line. My cadre and I check each individual firing position and I must be absolutely positive there is no rifle left on the line before I radio Joe that the line is safe and he can set up for High Intensity. Please – be quick about it so Joe can get his targets set in.

A couple of other things please.

My steel targets are OK for cartridges up to and including .30 caliber and all cast lead bullets. If you are bringing something like a .338 or .50 BMG, see me and I will point out some steel targets you can shoot.

Before we commence firing, I will ask Joe if guys can shoot tracer. Don't shoot tracer unless I say it is OK. We are getting into dryer conditions in late April so tracer may not be possible.

The Boy Scouts generally have a stand set up for lunch on Friday and Saturday but it is a good idea to bring something to eat for lunch just in case they don't show up this year. Water as well because there is none on site.

So, that about covers it. Please drive safely and we will see you at the end of April.
